The League of American Bicyclists recently announced an Equity Scholarship Program to reduce the barriers to bike education in underserved communities. Through the program, the League will offer approximately 40 full scholarships to League Cycling Instructor (LCI) Seminars to people of color interested in teaching bike education courses in underserved communities.
As the League has announced, empowering more people with an on-bike education gets to the heart of the organization’s vision of a nation where everyone recognizes and enjoys the many benefits and opportunities of bicycling. FABB shares this goal and wants to help local riders interested in becoming LCIs.
LCIs earn certification through a League Coach-led seminar, which prepares them to teach Smart Cycling classes to people of all ages. The LCI training seminar focuses on teaching and demonstration techniques used with future students on the road and in the classroom. The seminar emphasis is on how to teach bicycle safety and skills so as to provide increased comfort and confidence for new and returning bicyclists and youth. The seminar is normally one evening and two full days with as much as a third of the time spent on-bike.
The scholarship application will be open later this year with most of the scholarships distributed in 2021. FABB is ready to help interested Fairfax County bicyclists apply for the scholarship and will help disseminate information as it become available.
