- We conclude a week of good news by noting that construction of the McLean-Tysons Corner Center Bridge is set to begin this summer.
The Virginia Department of Transportation announced that construction will start this summer on a long-planned bridge across I-495 and shared-use trail linking the McLean Metro station to Tysons Corner Center.
FABB was an early advocate for this VDOT project and contributed inputs to ensure that an overhead bridge was added to the project rather than the original proposal for a shared use path with multiple crossings of Beltway on- and off-ramps. The revised plan now includes a 10-foot-wide path between Route 123 and I-495 along the west side of Old Meadow Road leading to 4,662-foot-long bridge (nearly 9/10ths of a mile) over the Beltway.
As Providence District Supervisor Dalia Palchik recently commented the bridge “will encourage walking and biking, save time, and reduce automobile traffic and carbon emissions.” FABB could not agree more.
