• Join virtual VDOT meeting on project to improve access to Franconia-Springfield Metro area on May 17.
  • Support planned shared-use path and other safety improvements.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will hold a virtual public information meeting on Monday, May 17, at 7:00 pm on plans to extend Frontier Drive (Route 2677) from its southern terminus at Franconia-Springfield Parkway (Route 289) to Loisdale Road (Route 789).

The project aims to relieve congestion and improve access to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station, the Springfield Mall and Town Center area, the General Services Administration (GSA) complex, the Northern Virginia Community College Medical Education Campus, and the new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) building on Springfield Center Drive.

In addition to roadway construction, new ramps and intersections, and related changes, the preliminary design plans include a shared-use path (although its exact location is unclear from available materials).

FABB needs local riders familiar with the area to participate in the meeting and to provide their ideas to VDOT to ensure that the shared-use path meets user needs and remains a part of the plan.
