FABB is proud to be participating in the recent launch by the Coalition for Smarter Growth (CSG) and immigrant advocacy organization CASA of a Safe Streets for Bailey’s Crossroads campaign. Amid a rise in crashes killing and injuring vulnerable road uses in Fairfax County, the campaign seeks to engage and organize the Bailey Crossroads’ community in advocating and winning safer streets and improved access to walking, biking and accessing transit and services.
This campaign has been made possible by a generous $50,000 grant to CSG and CASA by the Mobility Fund, a consortium of national foundations. FABB salutes CSG and CASA for their success in winning one of the few grants awarded in a nationwide competition.
A large immigrant community resides in and around Bailey’s Crossroads, and many rely on biking, walking, and the bus to get to work and other daily activities. The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) have identified the Route 7 corridor through the community as a high-risk area for vulnerable road users based on years of data showing high numbers of fatalities and serious injuries. The lack of sidewalks, inadequate safe crossing options, bus stops without crosswalks, and heavy high-speed traffic contribute to the danger. Unfortunately, no significant investments in safety improvements have been made to stem the traffic fatalities and injuries that plague residents trying to navigate their community on foot or by bike.
The Safer Streets for Bailey’s Crossroads campaign seeks to create a model for local engagement and successful advocacy that can be applied in other priority communities in our county.
