Bike Month is ending, but the celebration of bicycling continues. This Thursday, June 3, is the fourth annual World Bicycle Day. The United Nations declared the event to recognize the versatility and uniqueness of the bicycle, as well as its reliability and sustainability as a mode of transportation for all people around the globe.

The World Bicycle Day resolution encourages improved road safety and the integration of bicycling into sustainable mobility and transport infrastructure planning and design. It also emphasizes the use of the bicycle as a means of fostering sustainable development, promoting health, preventing disease, strengthening education, including physical education, for children and young people, and promoting tolerance, mutual understanding and respect.

More simply, bikes are good for people, the environment, and the economy and are often the best way of getting around.

Let’s all celebrate the bicycle by getting out for a ride on Thursday. Then, FABB encourages everyone to join us in transforming northern Virginia into a world leader by making bicycling a key part of an affordable, safe, and expanded multimodal transportation network.
