• Bike to Work Day is Tuesday, September 22.
  • Plan now to do your part to encourage others to ride and give bike commuting a chance.

One of the bright spots of the early months of the pandemic was the increase in biking even though the usual Bike Month events in May were postponed. Well, September is the month to celebrate.

Bike to Work Week will be between September 21 and 27 while Bike to Work Day is set for Tuesday, September 22, to coincide with World Car Free Day. Plan now to do your part to encourage others to ride and give bike commuting a change.

FABB Bike Advisors, a group of volunteers from around the county, are still available to advise new commuters on bike routes to work or wherever they need to go. We can help you select a well-chosen bike route that avoids high-volume, high-speed roads and provides a safer and more pleasant commute. Our advisors also can provide helpful advice on the equipment and other resources needed to have a successful bike trip. To request help with a bike route or other bike commuting question, email us at [email protected] or click here.

World Car-Free Day, meanwhile, encourages motorists to give up their cars for a day and promotes improvement of mass transit, carpooling, cycling and walking, and the development of communities where jobs are closer to home and where shopping is within walking distance. Forty percent of all trips in the U.S. are less than two miles, making bicycling a feasible and fun way to get around. Studies show that for many of these short trips in cities and similar densely packed areas, you can reach your destination more quickly using a bicycle than a car.

In our area, Commuter Connections is offering promo codes for a $30 gift card to local merchants to commuters who take a Car Free Day pledge by September 22. Plus, all who take the pledge will be entered for a chance to win great raffle prizes! You can take the free pledge here.
