FABB asks all county cyclists to take a few minutes to complete a survey by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) on biking in Fairfax County.
Fairfax County has applied once again to be recognized as a Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC). In 2017, thanks to the hard work of the Fairfax County Department of Transportation bicycle program, the country was recognized as a Bronze-level BFC, an award that lasts for four years and now must be sought again. As part of the county’s BFC application, LAB is seeking the views of riders familiar with Fairfax County and its efforts to support biking.
This survey is meant to provide context for the LAB review team’s decision-making process. It also will serve as valuable feedback for FCDOT’s bike program, which will get to see the results. The survey is open to anyone familiar with bicycling in our community, so this is an opportunity to show support for the improvements made over the past four years while highlighting the remaining problems the county needs to overcome to become truly bicycle-friendly.
A community recognized by LAB as a BFC is one that encourages people to bike for transportation and recreation. It is judged on the amount of bike facilities it has, the ratio of total bicycle network mileage to total road network mileage, bicycle education in schools (kudos to Sally Smallwood and Safe Routes to School), and the share of transportation budget spent on bicycling. Other criteria include Bike Month and Bike to Work events, an active bicycle advocacy group (that’s us and FABB is doing its part), an active bicycle advisory committee (the county’s Trails, Sidewalks, and Bikeways Committee), bicycle-friendly laws & ordinances, a current Bike Plan being implemented (yes!), and the ratio of Bike Program Staff to population.
The survey is available now and will remain open through Wednesday, March 31.
