FABB encourages local riders to join the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) for virtual community conversations on the ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan. Learn about the plan and share your stories about biking, walking, rolling (scooter/wheelchair/stroller), hiking, running, and riding in and around your local community. The goal is help FCDOT understand what people are experiencing and observing as the actively travel by providing public inputs about needed improvements.
The virtual conversation includes multiple ways to participate. You can start by taking this online survey, which is open until May 1, 2021.
You also can share your ideas at one of twelve community conversations that including nine evening meetings, two lunch & learn opportunities, and one meeting in Spanish. The meetings will feature a presentation followed by time for questions, feedback, and comments. You can find the meeting schedule and registration information at this FCDOT webpage.
For residents who cannot attend the meetings in person, a video recording of the event along with the meeting presentation will be available on the ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan webpage.
The first meeting will be for Mason District residents and will be held at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 8. The other district meetings will follow over the next few weeks through the end of April. The first Lunch and Learn session will be on April 13 and the second on April 23. The Spanish-language meeting, Conversación comunitaria de transporte activo en español, will be on April 15.
This is local riders’ chance to advocate for:
- More funding for bicycle facility maintenance, including regular sweeping of bike lanes and trails, removing vegetation from paved trails, and regular surface repaving.
- A connected bicycle network that goes beyond the small sections created by the annual repaving program.
- Action to curb speeding by motorists.
- Better wayfinding signage to assist users and encourage riding.
- More bike parking at existing retail and commercial locations.
- Trail and sidewalk lighting at major intersections.
- Your great ideas to make Fairfax County more bicycle-friendly.
It has been a busy period for virtual meetings and surveys, but this is too good of an opportunity to share your ideas with local transportation officials to miss. Please plan now to participate and register for one or more of these conversations to make bicycling better in Fairfax County.
