Who We Are

The Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling is a volunteer-led organization working to make bicycling fun, safe and accessible for people of all ages in Fairfax County. Since 2005, FABB volunteers have been an effective voice among Fairfax County transportation professionals, elected officials, community advocates and leaders. FABB’s capstone effort over the past few years has been the successful adoption of the County’s Bicycle Master Plan and Map, which was approved in December 2014. FABB works tirelessly uniting government, local leaders, bike organizations, and citizens towards a common goal of making bicycling transportation safe, accessible and commonplace in Fairfax County for all ages, abilities and skill levels.

Bicycle Friendly Community

In 2017 and again in 2021, Fairfax County with FABB’s help was named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclists. Our goal is to reach the Silver Level but much work needs to be done. See the Bicycle Friendly Report Card and Silver standards here.

Joy Faunce, a Fairfax County native, loves the freedom bicycling offers and believes accessible and safe bicycling is something everyone deserves. An avid road and offroad (gravel) cyclist, Joy can regularly be found on the trails in the area. Appreciating the work FABB does and wanting to see Fairfax bicycling infrastructure continue to improve, she looks forward to working with other board members and volunteers on advancing the organization's priorities of encouraging more people to ride by making bicycling safe.

Jeff Gauger is a resident of the Mount Vernon District with his wife and two sons. He has been an avid bike commuter for about 25 years. He now makes his way from southeast Fairfax County into downtown DC each day via the Mount Vernon Trail. Jeff also is a mountain biker and enjoys riding in Fairfax County, especially at Meadowood, Laurel Hill, and Fountainhead.

Howard Albers is a retired auditor and lives in Fairfax near Inova Fairfax Hospital. Riding the Gerry Connolly Cross County and W&OD Trails provides him with much needed exercise. Always looking for new places to ride safely, he is currently advocating for the proposed two new bicycle crossings over I-495 and the Arlington Boulevard Trail. Howard also enjoys life by volunteering at the Fairfax County Park Foundation and hoping to learn something new every day.

Alexis Glenn lives in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County. After fits and starts of trying to bike on a regular basis, she finally dived into everyday biking after taking a new job close to home. She began to see safety gaps in her community that discourage casual biking and force people to drive, even for very short trips. This prompted her to join FABB to engage her local government and community to make travel by bicycle safe and easy for all ages and abilities. Alexis splits her riding time between a nimble Bianchi C-Sport and a Pedego e-bike.

Jeff Anderson is CFO at Resigility, a small strategic consulting firm in Fairfax. He lives in Oakton and rides for fitness, to complete errands, and in competition as a Cat 3 Masters racer. Jeff got involved in bicycle advocacy when he attempted to ride his oldest child to school in 2009 and discovered there was no bike rack. His work helped to change Fairfax County Public Schools policies toward children bicycling to school. Jeff also helped lead FABB's transition from a component of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association to an independent non-profit group in 2015, serving as the group's president for its first three years.

Yvette White uses a collection of trails, bike lanes, and roads almost daily to navigate from her home in Annandale to locations in and around Fairfax County. After starting regular bike commuting in 2016, she realized bicycling is not just a recreational activity but a mode of transportation that positively impacts health, community, and the environment. Yvette became a member of FABB to encourage bicycle ridership and advocate for improved bicycle infrastructure across the county.

Shawn Newman, a Springfield District resident for the past ten years biked regularly as a kid and in his teens. After a fifteen-year break, he rediscovered his love of biking while teaching his kids to ride. Now an avid rider, Shawn bikes to work, for fun, and for errands all year long and participates in BikeArlington's Freezing Saddles competition. He is a strong advocate for smarter zoning as a way to decrease the distance residents need to travel, for better walking and biking connections, and for the safety of vulnerable road users. Shawn leads FABB's social media efforts on multiple platforms and represents FABB on the Fairfax County Trails, Sidewalks, and Bikeways Committee and the Virginia Bicycling Federation's legislative engagement committee. Shawn publishes articles on the Greater Greater Washington website and is the voice behind West Springfield Walkable Community on Facebook and Twitter.

Kevin Romance began his love affair with bicycles delivering newspapers on his red Schwinn. Bicycles meant independence for this DC native as he rode to the Dart Drug to play PacMan before graduating to long distance rides on the W&OD Trail as a teenager. He has completed several centuries since then and has continued to ride following a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (inflammatory arthritis) and two hip replacements. Through FABB, Kevin hopes to improve bicycle access and safety in underserved communities and advocate for bikes for commuting, fitness, and play and for building healthy communities.

A longtime cyclist, Taylor Jones has worked in the bicycle industry for more than 20 years. He is the Executive Director of Bikes for the World in Rockville, rescuing unwanted bikes and getting them to people for whom a bike can transform their life. Previously, Taylor oversaw the establishment and operation of Capital Bikeshare in DC and CoGo bikeshare in Columbus, Ohio. A USA Cycling member, Taylor has been involved in road, cyclocross, and mountain biking as a racer, event organizer, volunteer, and team mechanic. He currently dedicates time to supporting a successful junior cycling team and exploring the DC area by bike.

Bruce Wright lives in Reston with his wife Kerie, both of whom were founding members of FABB. He teaches bicycling skills on weekends and relies on his bike for most of his trips around the area. He and Kerie have traveled around the country on their folding bikes. Bruce started FABB in 2005 with a few other committed volunteers to advocate for a county bike coordinator and dedicated funding for bike facilities. Over the years the county has regularly turned to Bruce for advice on bicycle maps, parking regulations, and other bicycling related matters. In 2015 the Fairfax County Federation of Citizens Associations recognized Bruce with a Citation of Merit for his voluntary contributions of time and talent to enhance the quality of life of Fairfax County citizens.

Mark Warno has been involved with cycling for over 35 years, riding as a USA Cycling Category 1 racer, Gran Fondo competitor, and participant in many organized Century rides. When not riding, he supports his son, who races for the Baltimore-based U23 Kelly Benefit Strategies team. Mark and his wife ride the various trail networks throughout the MidAtlantic area on their tandem. Mark is focused on bicycle infrastructure, interconnected bicycle lanes, safe design of new bicycle infrastructure, and the maintenance of existing infrastructure.
