FABB encourages our supporters who live in and around Route 7 between Tysons and Reston to make plans now to attend one of two public information meetings on the Route 7 Corridor Improvement Project. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) project team plans to showcase the latest project design and share the project schedule. This will be a great opportunity to talk about your questions on right of way, environmental issues, traffic engineering, sound barriers and other information.

Construction is scheduled to begin this summer to widen Route 7 from just west of Reston Parkway to Tysons with completion set for 2024. The best news is that two parallel 10-foot trails are included in the project. This interactive map can be viewed for details.

We need area bicyclists to show up in numbers to support construction of the trails and advocate for safe crossings at the intersections.

  • The first meeting is on Tuesday, May 7, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Forestville Elementary School, 1085 Utterback Store Road, in Great Falls.
  • The second meeting is in Vienna, on Tuesday, May 14, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Colvin Run Elementary School at 1400 Trap Road.

In the section of Route 7 that intersects with Colvin Run Road VDOT’s planners are looking to add a tunnel under Route 7 to connect the north and south areas of Colvin Run Mill Park. On the north side, this will provide better access to the Gerry Connolly Cross Country Trail as well as a parking lot shared with the Colvin Run Mill property. To the south, the tunnel will mean easier access to Colvin Run Stream Valley (labeled as Colvin Run Mill Park on the VDOT project map), which has three miles of trails known as Rails to River Trail.

Please plan to attend the meetings to learn even more about VDOT plans. If you have any questions or concerns, you can reach the project team at [email protected] or 833-777-7411.
