The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) will hold three public information meetings in March and April on the Fairfax County & Franconia-Springfield Parkways Alternatives Analysis and Long Term Planning Study. FCDOT is following up on last year’s public meetings and is seeking input on future corridor enhancements for the Parkways, based on residents’ personal experiences and desires for multimodal access, connectivity and overall operations.
During and after the public meetings in 2018, FCDOT received less than 500 comments on bicycle/pedestrian proposals. The comments supported enhanced facilities, opposition to widening the highways if bike/ped facilities would be impacted, and a continuous bike/trail along the Parkways.
The proposed bicycle and pedestrian enhancement projects include improvements to existing facilities to meet current design guidelines, efforts to address grading issues, and the completion of missing connections within the existing network. Proposals for expanded bicycle and pedestrian facilities also include a shared use path on both sides of Parkways.
The meetings are scheduled as follows:
- Wednesday, March 27 at Willow Springs Elementary School, 5400 Willow Springs School Road, Fairfax.
- Thursday, March 28, at Armstrong Elementary School, 11900 Lake Newport Road, Reston.
- Thursday, April 4, at Sangster Elementary School, 7400 Reservation Drive, Springfield.
The meetings will begin with a presentation at 7 p.m., followed by a question and answer period at 7:30 p.m., and time for public input activities at 8 p.m.
