FABB is proud to be working with the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), the League of American Bicyclists (LAB), and other key partners in presenting the 2019 Transportation Safety Leadership Training Program. If you are committed to making bicycling better in Fairfax County, this is a wonderful opportunity. The free training—a $500 value—is open to local government, state, and regional staff, police, faculty and teachers, and active Northern Virginia residents committed to improving bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Applicants need to apply by next Friday, March 1, 2019, before 5:00 pm. Selected candidates will be notified by Tuesday, March 5, 2019.
Applicants must make a firm commitment to attend the training. Other requirements for selection include a commitment to do at least two community pedestrian and bicycling safety outreach events by September 15 and one more by January 2020 (an event list is provided in the application). Applicants also must have a local government or lead organization mentor who will help you identify outreach events that support bicycle and pedestrian safety. Certified instructors will teach training program participants key strategies and skills for educating community members on pedestrian and bicycling safety. The program offers three options and applicants can choose one or more: League Certified Instructor Seminar, Smart Cycling, and Pedestrian Safety.

The League Certified Instructor (LCI) Seminar is a comprehensive 3-day period of instruction. Participants must first take the 1-day Smart Cycling Class at least one month prior to the seminar as well as complete an open-book assessment. The LCI Seminar will be held on April 26 (5pm-9pm), April 27 (8am-9pm), and April 28 (8am-3pm) at George Mason University in Fairfax.
The Smart Cycling class provides bicycle safety knowledge and skills from certified instructors with an online class component and six hours of classroom and on-bike instruction. Classes will be held on March 15 at GMU Manassas (back up date is March 22) and March 16 at GMU Fairfax (back up date is March 23).
In addition to WABA and LAB, these Transportation Leadership Safety seminars are made possible by George Mason University, Inova Hospital, City of Manassas, City of Fairfax, Prince William County, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Loudoun County, and the City of Alexandria. This training is part of a federal highway safety project underwritten by a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles grant to the Northern Virginia Regional Commission. Again, FABB is proud to be working with all of these partners.
